Distribution:
Storage

Overview

Storage is the process of holding products between production and the time they’re sold or distributed. Holding products in storage can help protect the products from damage and keep them safe.

Once your product is made and labelled, you might need a warehouse or storage service until it can be shipped to retailers or distributors. Sometimes, the manufacturer can store the product for you. Both options need a legal contract for storage, and you, as the owner of the goods, will need insurance in case of loss or damage.

Before agreeing to a contract, ensure all details like storage responsibilities, costs and conditions are written down clearly. Don’t rely on verbal agreements or emails, as unclear terms can lead to disputes that are harder to resolve. Being thorough helps you get the right deal for your artists and art centre.

How to store at your own premises

Where possible, store inventory in a clean and secure space where products are protected from damage and extreme temperatures. Use shelving to keep stock off the floor where possible and label and organise items in a way that works best for you. Keep clear records, including dates, to control stock levels.

SAM platform inventory management

Some art centres have access to the SAM (Stories, Art, Money) platform, which provides an effective solution for managing and tracking inventory.
